Clashes between law enforcement forces and protesters against the arrest of Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu took place last night in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir. Police used tear gas and water jets at some of the demonstrations, local opposition media reported.
Demonstrations by supporters of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) were organized for the second night in a row in many major cities across the country, the opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet reported.
Many of the demonstrators are students.
Clashes between police and demonstrators have occurred overnight on the grounds of the prestigious Middle East Technical University in Ankara. Police used tear gas and water cannons.

Meanwhile, another protest, which passed off peacefully, took place in the centre of Ankara.
Several thousand people gathered late last night in the park opposite Istanbul City Hall. The rally took place despite the ban on all mass gatherings and processions.
CHP leader Ozgur Ozel and Ankara mayor Mansur Yavas participated in the rally. Many youth and students again participated in the demonstration.
A number of other protests against Imamoglu's arrest were organised in the areas of several universities in the Turkish metropolis.
There have also been clashes between police and demonstrators in Izmir, with police using water jets against protesters.
