The Supreme Election Council (YSK) on Monday will announce the parties eligible to run in Turkiye's local elections on March 31, TRT Haber television reported.

According to the set time schedule, as from January 3 the parties will have to notify the YSK of the constituencies in which they will field candidates.

The parties have until 5 p.m. on February 20 to submit lists of candidates for mayor and municipal councillor, and the final lists will be made public on March 3.

Canvassing will start officially on March 21 and will go on until March 30, a day before polling day.

The local elections attract keen interest, especially in the country's largest cities, Ankara and Istanbul, where the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan lost the previous elections in 2019 for the first time since coming to power. Erdogan sets top priority by regaining Istanbul, where he was mayor in the 1990s.
