"The rule of law and democracy are our core values," Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel said in her address at the first meeting of the Balkan Constitutional Forum, held in Sofia.
"Thank you for the invitation to be part of the key messages you will project to the whole of Europe," Gabriel told the participants in the forum. She said the organisation of this event and the participation of high-level representatives from the European Commission and the European Court of Justice show the face of a Europe committed to the rule of law and democracy.
"The establishment of the Balkan Constitutional Forum and its first annual meeting are a continuation of the good cooperation established between the constitutional courts on the Balkan Peninsula. The Forum goes beyond cooperation, it aims to become a platform for exchange of best practices, ideas, and experiences between the participating constitutional justice jurisdictions. They are the guardians of the fundamental law and play a key role in the implementation of the principle of the rule of law," Gabriel noted.
"The meeting of the Balkan Constitutional Forum comes at an important moment for Bulgaria. We are in the middle of a constitutional debate which, in a little more than a month, should lead to the adoption by the National Assembly of amendments to the basic law," Gabriel said.
The opening ceremony was attended by Koen Lenaerts, President of the European Court of Justice, Marko Bosnjak, Vice President of the European Court of Human Rights, European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova, Bulgarian Minister of Justice Atanas Slavov, and representatives of the constitutional courts of Bulgaria, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Romania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Turkiye.
