Save Sofia has sent an official request to Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev to return the decision of the Sofia Municipal Council on stopping the public night transport in the capital, so that the topic would be discussed again at the Council's next session, said the party's press centre on Monday.
At their last meeting, the municipal councillors voted in favour of discontinuing two lines of Sofia's public night transport, and limit the other two lines to run only on Fridays and Saturdays. Save Sofia pointed out that following the Council's decision, hundreds of people sent statements in support of the city's night service, with thousands of people on social networks also protesting against the decision. A petition organized by residents of Sofia already has over 7,000 signatories.
Save Sofia noted that this is a step back for a modern, connected, and accessible city. "The discontinued service deprives thousands of Sofianites and guests of the city of a convenient and safe way to get around at night, while at the same time stimulating the use of private cars, contributing to traffic jams, and air pollution," the press release reads.
In anticipation of a new discussion at the next Council meeting, Save Sofia has started to hold talks with councillors from the political groups in favour of the decision, in an attempt to convince them to change their minds.
