The Bulgarian Socialist Party's National Council has decided that the party will not support a government with a mandate of GERB-UDF or the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, BSP acting chairperson Atanas Zafirov told reporters on Saturday. According to him, the change in the party is irreversible.

Zafirov has been elected as BSP acting chairperson at a meeting of the party’s National Council on Saturday, following socialist leader Korneliya Ninova’s resignation over the party’s poor results in the June 9 national and European elections.

According to Zafirov, 117 party members were present at the National Council meeting and all decisions were taken by a majority of over 100 votes. Zafirov explained that the BSP is beginning a full cycle of elections that will end with a congress in November.

Zafirov explained that he had been elected as an acting leader of the party, while Borislav Gutsanov had been elected chairperson of the working group to oversee and manage the process of preparing the party's election cycle and congress.
