Bulgarian MEP Nekov Demands
Just Compensations for
Bulgarian Farmers
Strasbourg, September 16 (BTA) - Bulgarian agricultural
producers are exposed to higher risk from the Russian embargo
due to the devastating floods which additionally damaged the
crops in the country, MEP Momchil Nekov of the Bulgarian
Socialist Party said in the European Parliament on Monday
evening. He was speaking about the consequences of the ban on
import of European agricultural produce in Russia.
Nekov insisted that the European Commission take into view the
situation in Bulgaria, where "as a result of the unfavourable
climate conditions part of the crops has been destroyed, and the
producers are subjected to additional pressure because of the
increased import of agricultural produce from the EU."
"It is unacceptable to place all producers under a common mark,
to compete for the highly insufficient compensations of 125
million euro, which were spent within less than ten days," Nekov
said.
The Bulgarian MEP, who is a member of the Agriculture and Rural
Development Committee, underscored that farmers in the new EU
Member States are affected to a larger extent by the embargo
also as a result of the lower subsidies they receive in
comparison to the old Member States.
Nekov expressed disapproval with the discrimination of
independent farmers, who receive a smaller European subsidy than
those who are members of branch organizations. This measure
once again affects the new agricultural entrepreneurs in the EU,
he added.
