Most Popular Male Name in Bulgaria Is Georgi, Female Name - Maria, Statistics Show

Sofia, January 5 (BTA) - Victoria remained the most preferred name for newborn girls in 2015 (847), followed by Maria (803), and Nicolle (737). The first twelve most preferred names also include Alexandra, Gabriela, Daia, Raya, Ioanna, Sophia, Simona and Elena, preliminary data of the National Statistical Institute show.

Georgi and Alexander were the most popular names for newborn boys in 2015 (respectively 1,109 and 1,052). The most popular names also included Martin, Dimiter, Ivan, Nikolai, Nikola, Daniel but not the otherwise frequent among men as a whole Yordan, Vassil, Todor, Stoyan and Atanas.

The most widespread Muslim names for boys continued to be Emir (137) and Mert (111), and for girls - Elif (153) and Melek (74).

At the end of 2015, the personal names of permanent resident in Bulgaria were nearly 69,000 (slightly over 30,000 for men and nearly 39,000 for women).

Although their number has declined compared to the previous year, the most popular names among men continue to be Georgi (169,000), Ivan (161,000), and Dimiter (125,000). Next come Nikolai (94,000), Peter (75,000), Hristo (61,000), as well as Alexander, Stefan, Yordan and Vassil - over 50,000 each. Of all men in the country 1,314,000, or 37.6 per cent, have 20 of the most popular names.

The most frequent male Muslim names are Mehmed (16,000), Ahmed (13,000) and Mustafa (12,000).

The most popular name among women continues to be Maria (118,000), followed by Ivanka (62,000), Elena (54,000) and Yordanka (40,000). Then come Penka (32,000), Daniela (30,000), as well as Rositsa, Desislava, Petya, Mariika and Gergana.

The most popular Muslim names for women include Fatme (17,000), Aishe (15,000) and Emine (9,000).
