2025 marks the 1,170th anniversary of the Bulgarian alphabet and Slavonic literature, and the National Library will host a series of events under the title “Year of the Glagolitic Alphabet”. This was announced by the library on Thursday.
On this occasion, the Library is organizing an Open Day and on January 20 (Monday), from 12 pm to 2 pm, the central lobby of the Library will host an exhibition of the Enina Apostle and the Argyrian Manuscript, which will be presented by experts of the institution.
Both manuscripts are kept under constant temperature and humidity conditions and given this, their exposure outside the controlled environment will be within two hours.
The Argyrian Manuscript dates from the early 13th century. The 58-page fragment, inscribed on parchment, contains portions of a liturgical book. The Enina Apostle is an Old Bulgarian manuscript from the 10th-11th century and is the oldest Cyrillic monument preserved on the territory of Bulgaria.
The first of four workshops for the year themed "I write in Glagolitic", dedicated to the Year of the Glagolitic, will be held on the same day. The workshops are for schoolchildren and the aim is for them to learn more about the oldest Slavic alphabet and its unique graphemes. During the one-hour workshops, participants will learn to write and count with the Glagolitic letters.
