Justice Minister Zaharieva Sets Top Priority on Judicial System Act

Sofia, January 6 (BTA) - Recently elected Justice Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva singled out the Judicial System Act as her top priority.

Zaharieva spoke as a guest lecturer at a public discussion on the Dutch Presidency of the EU Council, organized by the PanEuropa Bulgaria Association here on Thursday.

"We have been reforming and changing and going back to square one for 25 years now, but we have not yet reached the end, and the most eloquent fact is that trust in the judicial system is at very low levels," the Justice Minister said.

She added that revisions of the Judicial System Act come precisely after the amendments to the Constitution.

Apart from that, Zaharieva also prioritizes the procedural laws and the quality of forensic expert examinations.

The provisions concerning victims of crime are nearly finalized and will be published for public consultation by April, the Minister said.

The Netherlands' Ambassador in Sofia Thomas van Oorschot outlined the priorities of the Dutch Presidency. He noted that the EU must become a strong global player, that more efforts are needed for the protection of human rights, especially when there are hybrid threats or cyber-threats.
