Socialists Call for Resignation of  Interior Ministry  Leadership

Sofia, June 23 (BTA) - Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) - Left Bulgaria is calling for the resignation of the leadership of the Interior Ministry starting with Interior Minister Roumyana Buchvarova. In a declaration read out in Parliament's debating chamber, they say the resignation is called for by the failure in dealing with conventional crime and a recent gangland shootout in the seaside resort of Sunny Beach.
 
They expect the resignation within a week, said Krassimir Yankov as he read the declaration.

The Socialists also want the resignation of Education Minister Meglena Kuneva.

Yankov said that conventional crime has acquired its present scope because of poverty among a huge part of the population in Bulgaria. He said that crime has become rampant in small population centres and put the blame for it on "the anti-social government of GERB".

"The Interior Ministry leadership has abdicated from its duty to fight conventional crime and is unable to secure police presence in all towns and villages," Yankov said.

He called the Sunny Beach shooting a sign of the Ministry's failure in fighting organized crime as well.

One man was killed and one was severely injured in the shooting in which tens of men from two groups were involved.

Yankov argued that the Interior Ministry has proven unable to neutralize such clashes from their inception.

He believes that a newly established law-enforcement centre on the southern Black sea coast came late and that it is doomed because of the inadequacy of the top leadership of the Interior Ministry. He also said that taking such a measure in the peak of the tourist season was inadequate.

According to BSP, the Interior Ministry is also failing in protecting the national border from "the migrants' inroads".
