Bulgarian Foreign Minister Discusses Brexit Vote with British Ambassador

Sofia, June 24 (BTA) - Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov met here Friday with the UK Ambassador in Sofia, Emma Hopkins, to discuss the outcome of the UK referendum, the Foreign Ministry said.

Mitov said that Bulgaria respects the will of British citizens and yet it cannot but be disappointed that a nation with such major contribution to European policies chooses to go its own way. He also told the UK diplomat that her country remains an important partner for Bulgaria in Europe, as well as an ally in NATO and other international organizations.

Ambassador Hopkins said that a long negotiating process is in store for her country and that it will be careful as it negotiates the divorce terms with the EU to make sure they are to the best interest of both the UK and the EU.

The two sides also discussed the implications of the referendum for bilateral relations. They agreed that the two countries will preserve their traditional relations of friendship and continue to develop them in areas of mutual interest, singling out economy and business, the combat against crime, border security, internal order and security, and tourism.

Ambassador Hopkins said that things will remain unchanged for the time being and Bulgarian citizens will continue to travel freely and have the same employment opportunities in the UK as they do now.
