Outgoing Minister Kuneva: Education Is In Dire Need of Reforms

Sofia, December 22 (BTA) - "Education is in dire need of reforms," said outgoing Education Minister Meglena Kuneva here on Thursday, when she reported on the activities of her ministry. She added that she and her predecessor Todor Tanev had headed the Ministry during the most far reaching reform since 1990.

Kuneva recalled that a new Pre-school and School Education Act took effect on August 1 which required the drafting of 19 national educational standards. Currently, 51 curricula have been approved for 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th and 8th grade. On September 15 fifth graders had new books on history and civilization because of considerable differences between the new and old curricula.

She noted that under the new act new subjects have been introduced such as computer modelling for 3rd and 4th grade and technology and entrepreneursip for 1st to 10th grade, and civil education for 11th and 12th grade.

Kuneva said that the schools have launched a campaign against cheating at school in order to teach pupils rules and integrity.
