Iranian Citizen Detained at Turkish Border for Transporting 214 Kg Heroin

Haskovo, Southeast Bulgaria, April 26 (BTA) - A 31 year-old Iranian truck driver was detained at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the border with Turkey for attempting to smuggle 214 kg of heroin, valued at close to 14 million leva, the Plovdiv Appellate Prosecution Office said Wednesday.

The accused drug trafficker entered Bulgaria from Turkey on April 24, driving an Iranian-registered Scania truck. The driver presented papers, according to which he was transporting canned spices.

The truck was bound to Poland. It was selected for an X-ray scan, which showed that the contents in some of the cans had a different density. The authorities found heroin in 468 of the cans.

The investigation is conducted by an investigating inspector from the Bourgas Customs Office, under the supervision of Haskovo's District Prosecution Office. The suspect is in custody.
