Conference Discusses
Responsibility of Public Mass Media in
Digital Age

Sofia, January 25 (BTA) - The Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) and the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) Friday hosted a conference on the future of the public mass media in the digital era. In a video address to the participants in the discussion, Mariya Gabriel, the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, spoke about the responsibility of the public media. "During times when information pours from everywhere, people rely on the public mass media to help them navigate the ocean of news, separate the truth from misinformation, hear all viewpoints on a given event, see all nuances and undertones in an environment which some cast as only black and white," Gabriel said.

She urged the public media to take full advantage of the new technologies so that their audiences and viewers can get even faster and accurate information.

BNR Director General Alexander Velev said that the dialogue is needed so that people know what public media do, and the management of the media to know what people expect of them.

BNT Director General Konstantin Kamenarov said that the public media should not rest on their long and "glorious" histories and should work as if created "only yesterday".

Chairperson of the Council for the Electronic Media Sofia Vladimirova said that the public media should be part of the change and of the digital world, and be trend-setters. LY/ZH//
