Conference on Bulgarian
Persons and Memorial Sites
in Moldova Opens in Chisinau

Chisinau, March 26 (BTA cor. Irina Bogoeva) - A conference on renowned Bulgarian persons and memorial sites in Moldova took place Tuesday in the Bulgarian library in Chisinau. The event was organized by the Society for Bulgarian Studies (SBS) in Moldova and by the Bulgarian association "Vuzrazhdane", the SBS press centre said.

The conference is part of a series of such events that aim to familiarize the public with popular Bulgarians who significantly contributed in different ways to Moldova, and with locations related to Bulgarian history and culture, forum moderator Dr Nikolay Chervenkov said.

SBS Deputy chair Dr Ivan Duminica presented a report on Bulgarians in the government of Chisinau in the period 1830-1870s. The forum also included a discussion of key figures in the Bulgarian national liberation movement in Chisinau, among them freedom fighters Georgi Rakovski and Hristo Botev, and of the connection between the Moldovan Capriana monastery and the Bulgarian national revival period. The monastery owned a great deal of Old-Bulgarian literature and supported the issuing of Bulgarian revolutionary literature and periodicals, Chervenkov noted.

The participants said it is necessary to continue working on the topics discussed, to visit and maintain the memorial sites, and to erect monuments in honour of Bulgarian history and culture.

The reports will be published on the SBS website. LI/TH
