Nine Tax Officers Detained for Suspected Corruption

Veliko Turnovo, North Bulgaria, February 24 (BTA) - Nine tax officers were detained here in a specialized operation conducted by the State Agency for National Security and supervised by the Specialized Prosecution Office, the Specialized Appellate Prosecution Office (SAPO) said in a Wednesday press release.

The operation was conducted against suspected corrupt tax officers, employed by the National Revenue Agency's (NRA) Veliko Turnovo office, who allegedly asked for and received bribes, SAPO's press service explained.

The investigation involved searches and seizures as well as the use of special surveillance means. A number of documents and large sums of money were seized as evidence, proving the group's criminal activities. Witnesses are being questioned.

Among the detained are nine persons, among whom is the former head of the NRA's local office, the head of the Control Directorate, head of the Selection Directorate, head of the Audits Department and well as tax inspectors.

The authorities are cooperating with NRA Director Boyko Atanassov, the press release noted.
