Greenpeace Vessel to Study Black Sea Ecosystems
Bourgas, on the Black Sea, August 1 (BTA) - A purpose-built sailing yacht, Rainbow Warrior, will study ecosystems in the Black Sea. The vessel, owned and operated by Greenpeace, will be in Bulgarian waters between August 5 and 14, the local authorities in Bourgas said.
The vessel will visit the ports of Bourgas and Varna on August 5-6 and 12-13 and will be open to visitors.
The visit comes as part of a campaign by Greenpeace and Za zemiata for plastic-free oceans. Within the national campaign scientists from the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research and the Institute of Oceanology with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences will carry out research activities. Rainbow Warrior's state-of-the art equipment will survey for garbage patches and netting in protected areas and will explore the state of ecosystems.
The Black Sea is polluted by snack wrappings, plastic bottles and bags. According to research data, over 3 tonnes of waste are washed daily into the sea.
