Starchevata International Masquerade Festival was unveiled with a fire show in Razlog on Friday, Razlog Municipality reported. Also on the programme of the festival's 9th edition is a parade of 24 masquerade groups from Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Greece, and Serbia.

The parade is scheduled for Saturday morning. To participate are over 250 kukeri (mummers), with more than 2,200 people showcasing the local beauty and traditional costumes. A huge horo (traditional chain dance) will be performed.

Over the years, Starchevata has established itself as one of the most exciting events not only in the region but also in the whole of Bulgaria. The festival is organized by Razlog Municipality under the auspices of the Culture Ministry and the Federation of European Carnival Cities. Federation President Lars Algell will be a special guest of this year's edition.
