Weightlifter Karlos Nasar was named Bulgarian Athlete in the Balkans in 2024 after winning the highest score in the traditional BTA poll for Balkan Athlete of the Year. He was honoured at a ceremony taking place in the BTA National Press Club in Sofia Friday.

Nasar did not attend in person and was represented by Atanas Litkov from his team.

In a BTA interview, Nasar said he has set high goals for his career.

Aged only 20, he won his first gold at the Paris Games in the summer of 2024 and hopes to add more Olympic titled in his collection. "My biggest hope is for longevity in sport, for two, three, four Olympic titles, as many as possible," he told BTA.

Nasar had a remarkable 2024: he also became world and European champion, set world records in the clean and jerk lift, the snatch lift and the total lift in the 89 weight class. In December 2024, he was named world weightlifter of the year.

These have brought him the fourth position in the 51st edition of the BTA Balkan Athlete of the Year poll.

He ended the season with a shoulder injury but won't have surgery and hopes to make full recovery through medications and physical therapy.

He said he spent the year-end holiday season with his loved ones, quietly. "You never get enough rest but I feel energized and ready to go back to what I do," he told BTA.

He also said, "The recuperation process continues, I have not dealt with the injury completely but we are working on it hard. I believe I have the right people next to me and together we will be overcome this hurdle. My plan is to first overcome the injury, recover the best I can, and then we have European Championship, World Championship and the World Cup."

Turning to young Bulgarian athletes, he urged them to work hard and fight for their dreams. "My message to young athletes is never to stop dreaming, to fight because dreams do come true but one has to fight for it," he said.
