The town of Tvardita from the Moldovan Region of Taraclia has been twinned with the Bulgarian town of Elin Pelin (West Bulgaria). The agreement on the establishment of partnership relations was signed by the two mayors Georgi Popov of Tvardita and Ivaylo Simeonov of Elin Pelin.
According to Tvardita Mayor Georgi Popov, the initiative for the agreement came from the mayor of Elin Pelin about two months ago. He noted that the goal of the partnership is to strengthen friendly ties and promote economic and cultural cooperation, as reported by the Taraclia media outlet TUK.MD.
"The agreement is based on mutual respect and a desire to develop the partnership. We plan joint projects in tourism, trade, and education. We are confident that this cooperation will benefit both towns," Popov said during a Municipal Council meeting.
Popov clarified that the agreement would not result in significant financial costs for Tvardita.
"The only expenses we will incur are related to organizing trips for our children to Bulgaria, which is already included in the agreement. The Bulgarian State will also take on similar commitments," he explained.
Tvardita has three twin towns in Romania and two in Bulgaria. The town has a population of about 6,000, 91.7% of whom are ethnic Bulgarians.
