site.btaBulgaria's University Enrollment Reaches 182,759 in 2024/2025 Academic Year

In the 2024/2025 academic year, Bulgaria has 182,759 university students, which is nearly 3,000 more than the previous year, according to data from the National Higher Education Map, updated Monday by the Council of Ministers.

Over 120,000 students are enrolled in Bachelor's and Professional Bachelor's degree programmes, while more than 58,000 are studying for a Master's degree. The total number of active students who are Bulgarian citizens is 167,022, making up over 91% of the total, while foreign students number 15,737 (9%). The number of doctoral students in higher education institutions is 5,673.

The most popular fields of study nationwide are Economics, Pedagogy, Medicine, Administration and Management, Pedagogy of Teaching, Communication and Computer Engineering, Informatics and Computer Sciences, and Healthcare. These eight fields account for over half of all active students in the country.

As of the update of the 2024 map, there are 51 accredited higher education institutions in the country, 38 of which are public and 13 are private.

The National Higher Education Map is updated annually, with its data serving to guide state policy on higher education.
