Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) has supported Ukraine from the very first minute, journalist Asya Pencheva said on Wednesday. "In the early hours of February 24, 2022, we crossed the Danube to be together with the people and to tell our listeners that it was nothing less than a war," Pencheva said.

She is BNR's correspondent in the Bulgarian city of Ruse, on the Danube River. On Wednesday, she took part in a discussion on Bulgarian expatriates in the media, held during the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in the south of Ukraine.

"Our being here together with BNR Director General Milen Mitev is another telling fact which shows that BNR is where the event is. Right now, the event is here. There is another event in Sofia [the inaugural sitting of the new Bulgarian parliament]. The big event is here."

Pencheva noted that expatriate Bulgarians revisit their homeland through BNR broadcasts. The national radio has several initiatives and series presenting the stories of Bulgarians worldwide. "We will continue to speak with Bulgarians and about Bulgarians, not to them, because the radio connects people, it does not preach."

The ongoing World Meeting of Bulgarian Media is mottoed "Media and Community". It will be on until June 21. The discussions are taking place in Odesa, Bolhrad and Izmail, which are home to large Bulgarian communities.

BTA is organizing the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Odesa, Bolhrad, and Izmail, Ukraine, from June 18 to June 21, 2024. The event is taking place with the support of Aurubis Bulgaria, A1 Bulgaria, Glavbolgarstroy Holding AD, Euroins Insurance Group, Postbank, SOF Connect, and the 13 Centuries of Bulgaria National Endowment Fund.
