16 years on since Russia launched its invasion of Georgia, Bulgaria reconfirms its steadfast support to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, wrote the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry on X, former Twitter.

We stand with the Georgian people in their resolute choice in favour of EU and NATO integration, it also said.

August 7 marks the 16th anniversary of the beginning of the offensive of Georgian troops against South Ossetia (a separatist pro-Russian region within Georgia).

Tbilisi's attempt in 2008 to regain control of South Ossetia led to a war in which Russia not only pushed Georgian forces out of the separatist territory, but also briefly entered Georgia and reached the central city of Gori and the western Black Sea city of Poti. According to official figures, 228 Georgians and 162 South Ossetian civilians died, the Guardian reports.
