Many streets in Sofia will be closed to traffic between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 8, when the city will host the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday. The starting-and-finishing line for the marathon will be in the central Battenberg Square.

The Sofia Directorate of the Interior Ministry will be in charge of maintaining public order and security along the route.

Five thousand runners of various age groups from a record 57 countries are expected to take part in the 40th Sofia Marathon. The total number includes 900 foreigners. Twenty-one of the world's best athletes will be competing. Ten men and four women of the world's long-distance running elite from Kenya, Morocco, Ethiopia and Rwanda have confirmed their participation at the standard marathon distance of 42.195 km. There will be three more running distances: 21 km, 10 km and 5 km.
