The General Assembly of the Supreme Bar Council, held on February 22 and 23, was opened in Sofia on Saturday by Chair Ivaylo Dermendjiev. The new Supreme Bar Council governing bodies will be elected this weekend.

National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova congratulated the lawyers at the beginning of the General Assembly,  as did the heads of the Supreme Court of Cassation, the Supreme Administrative Court, and a representative of the Supreme Judicial Council.

She informed the delegates of the General Assembly that the amendments and additions to the Bar Act submitted by the Council of Ministers have already been distributed for consideration by the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs and the MPs are yet to discuss them.

Kiselova expressed her confidence that the activities of lawyers will continue to be based on the principles of independence, trust, integrity, confidentiality, and compliance with the Code of Ethics will ensure that the interests of clients will be best protected. She stressed that not only the reputation of individual lawyers, but also the understanding of the rule of law of the person who approached them depended on professionalism and integrity.

In an address to the Supreme Bar Council, President Rumen Radev said that its role in protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens, as well as in promoting justice and legal certainty, is essential for the development of a democratic society, and expressed hope that the Council’s work will continue and be guided by the principles of independence, integrity, and protection of the rights of every person.
