Total current health expenditure in 2023 amounted to BGN 14.667 billion, of which BGN 9.243 billion (63%) was spent on government and mandatory contributory schemes (ministries and agencies, municipalities, National Health Insurance Fund, National Social Security Institute), show data published by the National Statistical Institute (NSI) on its website Thursday.

Household expenditures are estimated at BGN 5.207 billion, or 35.5% of total current health expenditures. The share of voluntary health service payment schemes (voluntary health insurance, non-profit organizations serving households, occupational medicine) is 1.5%.

A check with the NSI shows that in 2022, total health expenditure was BGN 12.860 billion, with approximately equal shares for government and mandatory contributory schemes and households.

The data is from the NSI's Health Accounts System survey for 2023, which is conducted in accordance with Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/1901 implementing Regulation (EC) No 1338/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards statistics on health care expenditure and financing.
