In Taraclia District, where ethnic Bulgarians make up 66% of the population, voters are casting their ballots in 32 polling stations during Moldova’s parliamentary elections on Sunday, September 28.
In the town of Taraclia itself, which serves as the administrative centre of the district, six polling stations have been opened, according to Natalia Neikulova, Chairperson of the Taraclia District Electoral Council, who spoke to BTA. The total number of registered voters in the district is 33,200, she added.
According to Neikulova, voting is proceeding smoothly and all polling stations opened on time. As of 12 noon local (and Bulgarian) time, however, voter turnout in the district was only 3%. Polls will remain open until 9 p.m.
Neikulova noted that voter turnout in Taraclia District is typically above 50% — averaging 53–54%. She expressed confidence that turnout for the current elections, which she described as important, would reach similar levels by the end of the day.
She also pointed out that many young people are currently living abroad and are unable to return home to vote in Taraclia.
Neikulova further stated that there is significant international interest in Moldova’s parliamentary elections, with international observers present at polling stations in Taraclia District.
