By late February or early March, Kozloduy NPP-New Builds is expected to submit an application for site selection for the construction of Unit 8 at Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (K-NPP), Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) Chair Tsanko Bachiyski said during a presentation on the agency's activities for 2024 on Wednesday.

The NRA is in ongoing communication with Kozloduy NPP-New Builds regarding the development of new units at the plant. The latest meeting was on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. NRA received confirmation that Kozloduy-NPP New Builds plana to submit a site selection application by the end of February or March.

At this stage, the licensing process requires an application for site selection. Once the site is chosen, the NRA will begin the approval process, Bachiyski explained. This means NRA will start reviewing the documentation and may issue an order approving the site for Unit 8.

The site for Unit 7 has already been approved, but since a new nuclear unit is planned there, a separate site selection application must be submitted to confirm the feasibility of adding another facility, he added.

Regarding Unit 7, Bachiyski expects Kozloduy NPP-New Builds to apply for design approval next year.

"Current indications suggest this will happen next year," he said.
