The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) joined the Earth Hour initiative on Saturday. The lights of the national news agency were switched off at 8.30 pm for one hour.

Other public buildings also had their lights off at that hour.

The main purpose of turning off the lights is not to affect energy consumption, but it is done as an expression of concern, hope and positivity, WWF-Bulgaria explained on the occasion of the initiative. The organizers recall that according to the Living Planet report there has been a 73% decline in the populations of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish. Over the last 50 years we have lost a serious percentage of the wildlife population and this is having an impact on the links in nature.

With a post on Facebook WWF-Bulgaria urge people to take an hour for nature, using the time to clean the space around their homes or workplaces, to plant flowers or herbs, and to dispose of their garbage separately. The organization invites people to share photos of their activities on social media to set an example and involve friends in the cause.

The first edition of Earth Hour was organized on 31 March 2007 from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm local time in Sydney, Australia. Then, 2.2 million people and 2,100 companies participated. Bulgaria first joined the campaign in 2008.

"Let's take 60 minutes of our time to do something good for the planet!". The focus of the campaign in Bulgaria this year is the country's wetlands and the invaluable role they play in sustaining ecosystems. The campaign in Bulgaria is dedicated to otters and their habitats.
