Bulgarian snowboarder Tervel Zamfirov claimed the gold in the men’s parallel slalom at the 16th Snowboard World Championships in Engadin, Switzerland. The 20-year-old triumphed after winning the final by 0.40 seconds ahead of Austria's Arvid Auner. He thus became the first Bulgarian to become world champion in Olympic alpine sports.
The bronze medal went to Italy's Aaron March, who prevailed in the small final over Austria's Andreas Prommegger.
The other Bulgarian athletes who took part in Saturday's parallel slalom failed to make it through the qualification rounds.
A few weeks ago, Tervel Zamfirov became a three-time world champion in the juniors, taking the titles in the parallel slalom, the parallel giant slalom and the team event. On Sunday, he will have the chance to compete for the gold in the mixed team snowboard cross event, where he will partner with his sister Malena Zamfirova, who placed seventh in the parallel giant slalom on Thursday.
