Bulgaria has a rich tradition in aviation and now it is writing a new chapter in its history. This is what Jesus Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect, the operator of the capital's airport, said on Thursday during a press conference ahead of the international aviation conference Aviation-Event 2024 SOF, which Bulgaria will host on Friday.
The forum, which will bring together more than 200 industry leaders, will focus on key trends shaping the region's aviation sector, including artificial intelligence and digitalization, sustainability, airport capacity and expansion, infrastructure and operations development, the battle for talent, and Bulgaria's strategic position within the Schengen area.
The focus of Thursday's press conference was SOF Connect's partnership with SITA, one of the world's leading aviation technology solutions companies, as well as the airport's strategy to develop as a regional leader in air transport.
"The aim is to make the airport a regional hub. This will mean travelling longer distances with fewer connections," Caballero said.
He added that the implementation of the plan to build a third terminal at Sofia Airport is expected, noting that with the future new Terminal 3, the capital's airport will become the largest in the Balkans and is expected to service about 20 million passengers a year.
