The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) held a rally in Sofia Monday launching staggered protests across the country to press demands for higher pay and energy security. Traffic in the centre of the city was briefly blocked by the protestors.

"I see the worst situation in agriculture, health and transport. If the pay gaps are not filled, it seems to me that there will be very serious tensions and protests," CITUB Plamen Dimitrov told the press.

The general protest started at 10 am and then from 11, urban public transport workers rallied to protest the low wages. CITUB demands an extra BGN 37 million in the state budget for pay rises in urban transport.

"For public transport, especially in Sofia, expect hard days," Dimitrov said. He explained that BGN 41 million are needed to increase wages by at least 15%.
