In the 1960s and 1970s, the Sofia-based Iskra cooperative was a major producer of Christmas tree ornaments. The company's products were well-received across the world and Bulgaria was the third biggest global exporter of Christmas tree ornaments during this period, after Japan and Poland.

The Iskra workers produced over 3,000 ornament designs in 1,000 colour variations.
