The Presidency of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament has unanimously decided to recommend the termination of membership of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF, transliterated DPS) party due to the actions of its Chair, Delyan Peevski, who is sanctioned under the Magnitsky Act, Renew Europe said in a press release on Sunday.
The Renew Europe Bureau will convene on Monday, December 23, to further discuss the decision. The group will hold a vote on Tuesday, January 14, to finalize the termination of membership of the Group of the MRF party.
The Renew Europe Presidency's decision follows efforts by political parties in Bulgaria to establish a "cordon sanitaire" around oligarch Delyan Peevski and his political faction. This situation is compounded by numerous allegations of corrupt acts involving Peevski and his network. In this context, the Renew Europe group is deeply worried by the targeted attacks against Renew Europe's partner party, Continue the Change (CC), and its representatives, including co-chair Kiril Petkov, the announcement further said.
Later on Sunday, CC came up with an official position that it welcomes the Renew Europe Presidency’s decision with satisfaction.
