About 50 vocational schools in Northeastern Bulgaria offer dual education (work and study) programmes, using over 100 companies as partners, Education and Science Minister Galin Tsokov said in Shumen on Tuesday, speaking at a conference on "Labour Market Opportunities in Northeastern Bulgaria", organized by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy. The discussion was attended by Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov and Ministers Ivanka Shalapatova of Labour and Social Policy, Bogdan Bogdanov of Economy and Industry, and Milena Stoicheva of Innovation and Growth.

Tsokov went on to say that the development of dual education is a top priority. Legislative amendments are being drafted to update the list of occupations, he noted. "This year is the European Year of Skills. We should be proud that Bulgaria has a youth skills development strategy, which will be implemented through sectoral policies," Tsokov said.

He added that Education 5.0 lays particular emphasis on the connection between learning and business, and this applies to higher education as well. Among the policy priorities, he singled out the effective link between science and business, the ever more important role of higher learning as a factor for regional development, and the establishment of consortia with the participation of businesses. Another highlight should be science-related industries. Dual education is being expanded to include higher education, which will help integrate education with science and business, Tsokov said.
