No commitments are made in the territorial just transition plans with regards to the operation of the Maritsa East mines and the thermal power plants there. This is extremely important to be said and understood, said Deputy Energy Minister Krassimir Nenov during the opening of the third discussion on the future of the Maritsa East energy complex, its prospects and the challenges. It took place at Stara Zagora town hall on Monday.
Nenov underscored that the plans aim to address the effects of the transition and allow to take measures to assist the people who are affected in relation to the new opportunities that are offered.

From his statement it transpired that there are slight revisions of some of the activities which will be financed. One focus is on the recultivation of the lands of Maritsa East Mines in addition to what their commitments are as concessionaire. Other areas relate to new industries, which are expected to be developed and offer new jobs in the region. These include carbon hydrogen generation, and renewable energy sources, added Nenov.

He added that he believed this meeting to be extremely important. Nenov said that a number of revisions have been made to the territorial plans which address issues raised in the past 8 to 9 months by the European Commission, without which the plans cannot be submitted. What has been lacking in the territorial plans is the issue of the green transition.

Participants in the discussion were met by protesters from the two largest trade unions, Podkrepa and the Confederation of Trade Unions in Bulgaria. They urged that the complex is kept in operation and criticized the draft territorial plan.
