site.btaFood Price Index Up by 0.93% in Fourth Week of August

The market price index (MPI), which reflects wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, went up by 0.93% to 2.164 points over the past week. The level of the MPI at the beginning of the year was 2,316 points. It then reached its spring high of 2,480 points in the beginning of March.

The baseline of 1.000 points was set in 2005.

The wholesale price of fruit, went down in the fourth week of August, according to the data of the Commodity Exchange and Wholesale Markets State Commission. The price of melons decreased by 3.4% and traded at BGN 1.40/kg.  Watermelons depreciated by 8.3% to BGN 0.77/kg.  

Peaches increased in price by 6.7% and sold at BGN 2.72/kg. The price of imported apples went down by 4%  to BGN 1.90/kg. The price of lemons decreased by 0.77% to BGN 2.93/kg. Bananas appreciated by 1.1% and traded at BGN 2.73/kg.

Changes in the wholesale price of vegetables were registered in both directions this week. Potatoes traded at BGN 1.37/kg, up by 3% from the third week of August. Cabbage appreciated by 5.4% to BGN 1.18/kg. Greenhouse tomatoes appreciated by 1.7% to BGN 2.34/kg and greenhouse cucumbers, by 17.9% to BGN 3.09/kg. The price of red peppers went down by 6.8% to BGN 2.34 and of green peppers, by 8.3% to BGN 1.77/kg. Carrots lost 5.5% to BGN 1.38/kg. 

The wholesale price of white brined cheese from cow's milk went up by 1.6% to BGN 11.30/kg. Vitosha yellow kashkaval cheese was selling at BGN 17.42/kg, up by 1.5%.

The price of yogurt (3% and over 3% fat content) decreased by 0.9% to BGN 1.13 per 400 g. Fresh cow's milk (3% fat content) traded at BGN 2.16 per liter, which is an increase by 0.9%.

The price of poultry increased by 1.9 % to BGN 6.52 per kilogram.

Eggs (size M) were sold at BGN 0.38 per piece wholesale.

Rice gained 0.6% to BGN 3.21/kg, lentils rose by 1.5% to BGN 4.15/kg, and beans appreciated by 3% to BGN 4.16/kg.

The wholesale price of sugar went up by 0.8% to BGN 2.43/kg. Type 500 flour appreciated by 5.3% to BGN 1.40/kg. Cooking oil traded at BGN 2.85 per litre in a plastic bottle and cow butter, at BGN 2.57 for a package of 125 grams.
