Burgas plans to leverage Rijeka's experience to strengthen its bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2032, the local municipal press centre said on Thursday. Rijeka, located on the Adriatic Sea, was elected European Capital of Culture in 2020 alongside the Irish city of Galway.

Representatives of Burgas Municipality visited Rijeka to explore possibilities for cultural exchange. Rijeka Mayor Marko Filipovic showed Burgas Deputy Mayor Diana Savateva how the Croatian city organizes the Rijeka Carnival, which attracts visitors from around the globe, along with other successful cultural initiatives that could be adapted to enrich Burgas' event calendar.

"The similar profiles of Burgas and Rijeka present an opportunity to adopt successful models and gain valuable insight into the challenges of preparing and implementing the European Capital of Culture candidacy," Savateva noted.

In January, Burgas began initial preparations for its bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2032.

Burgas and Rijeka have been twin cities since 2016.
