The stage show Blagodat [boon, blessing] that took place in Frankfurt's Saalbau Bornheim venue on Sunday was the most spectacular folk concert in Germany in recent years, Katya Kostova, director of Art Theater Berlin, told BTA. The event organized by Art Theater Berlin was dedicated to Pirin Folk Ensemble's 70th anniversary.
Kostova said that while foreign audiences rarely understand the meaning of the song lyrics, they are still impressed by the folklore elements and the dancing.
The ensemble performed dances and songs from various regions of Bulgaria. A bagpiper performed music from the Rhodope Mountains. At one point, part of the audience joined in a horo dance with members of the ensemble, which was one of the most exciting moments of the concert, Kostova shared.
Pirin Folk Ensemble wrote on its Facebook page: "What an amazing, exciting and emotional evening we had in Frankfurt! A celebration of the Bulgarian spirit, of the roots that connect us wherever we are around the world."
The ensemble, an important preserver of Bulgarian folklore, was founded in 1954. Its mission is to popularize traditional Bulgarian singing, dancing and rituals. Throughout the years, Pirin has performed more than 10,000 shows across 60-plus countries.
