A new EU-funded research centre opened in Sofia Tuesday to join the research work on clean energy transition. Located on the Geo Milev Campus of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as part of a National Centre of Mechatronics and Clean Technologies, the cutting-edge facility was built on close to EUR 30 million in support from the European Commission via the European Regional Development Fund.

The ribbon was cut by Bulgarian government and EC officials: Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, Environment and Water Minister Julian Popov, Deputy Minister of Innovation and Growth Georgi Angelov, Boyko Blagoev from the European Commission Representation, Academy of Sciences President Julian Revalski and the Mayor of Sofia's Slatina borough, Georgi Iliev.

Geo Milev Campus is one of three high-tech facilities created under the project for a National Centre of Mechatronics and Clean Technologies. It was built by 12 research units of the Academy of Sciences coordinated by the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry.

"The Centre will strive for scientific excellence in its research activities, such as the creation of technologies for the transformation and storage of clean energy, and methods for obtaining, purifying, and storing hydrogen. The facility also aims to enhance the competitiveness of the Bulgarian industry in crucial technological areas such as mechanics, control systems, and electromobility," said the European Commission.

The Commission also said that these projects take place at an important juncture in EU policy as the EU makes the transition to a net-zero economy with a focus on home-grown renewables and increasing energy efficiency. "This inauguration also signals Bulgaria's efforts to establish itself as a leader in clean technologies, supporting young researchers & businesses, and strengthening relations with science and business communities," the statement goes.
