A total of 937,369 children will be born in Turkiye in 2024, show data of the Directorate General of Civil Registration and Citizeship Affairs with the Interior Ministry announced by Minister Ali Yerlikaya on social networks.

Women had twins in 15,065 cases, triples in 290 cases, and quadruplets in 6 cases.

Among the personal names of those born in 2024, the most popular name for girls was Defne (7,661), followed by Asel (7,554), Zeynep, Asya and Gökçe. For boys, the first place goes to those with the name Alparslan (8,304), followed by Göktug (5,796), Metehan, Yusuf, and Ömer Asaf.

The name Defne is of Greek origin and means "laurel tree". This name is associated with grace, beauty, and endurance. As a noun it refers to elegant, beautiful, and strong people.

The name Alparslan means fearless, brave, noble, lion. That was the name of a Seljuk ruler nicknamed the Great. This name was also the most popular for boys born in 2023.

For girls born in 2023, the top name was Asel ("honey" in Arabic), followed by the names Zeynep and Defne.
