The Union of Bulgarian Writers celebrated its 110th anniversary on Thursday with a celebration at the Central Military Club in Sofia.

President Rumen Radev, who was the patron of the event, said in his speech that culture, speech, ideas and values are the cementing elements of the Bulgarian nation. According to him, the mission of writers today is no less significant than their mission 110 years ago. "It is our duty - the duty of the state and our society - to support you in these difficult times for Bulgarian culture," Radev added.

Union Chairman Boyan Angelov said that the creative association was founded by 19 young writers, and among the first honorary chairmen was Ivan Vazov. Now the union has more than 800 members, he said. Angelov added that the Union of Bulgarian Writers was the first writers' association in Europe.

Deputy Culture Minister Amelia Gesheva addressed writers, saying that society needs spiritual strength today.

The ceremony on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the Union of Bulgarian Writers was also attended by the wife of President Rumen Radev - Desislava Radeva, the head of Radev's office Galab Donev, the chairwoman of the Union of Bulgarian Journalists Snezhana Todorova and others.
