The construction of a tunnel for the extension of Sofia’s third metro line through the Slatina Borough officially began on Thursday.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, Deputy Mayors Iliyan Pavlov and Ivan Vasilev, Metropolitan Director Stoyan Bratoev, Sofia Municipal Council Chair Tsvetomir Petrov, municipal councilors, and representatives of the companies involved in the project.

"The metro is a strategic priority for the city. It was under the previous administration, it remains so today, and I hope it will continue to be in the future," Mayor Terziev said. He emphasized that the metro system is the backbone of urban transport and plays a crucial role in Sofia’s development.

Terziev acknowledged the efforts of the previous city administration in expanding the metro network and assured that construction is now progressing at an accelerated pace. "We are working on two new sections, currently in the contractor selection phase, and ten new metro stations are at various stages of design," he added.

The construction of the two-lane tunnel is expected to be completed by mid-2026. The metro extension will include six new stations, starting from the [G. S. Rakovski] Military Academy and reaching Sofia Tech Park. The entire section is scheduled to be operational by 2027.
