GERB proposed amendments to the Religious Denominations Act to explicitly state that the only representative of the traditional religion in the country, Eastern Orthodox Christianity, is the Bulgarian Orthodox Church - Bulgarian Patriarchate (BOC-BP). According to GERB, while registered confessions are free to define their names, they must be clearly distinguished from the only Orthodox Church recognized by law, namely the BOC-BP.

GERB's motives to the bill are that the BOC-BP is a member of the One, Holy, Conciliar and Apostolic Church, which is approved by the canons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the traditional Orthodox denomination.
