Bulgaria has achieved one of its strategic goals by joining Schengen, which is of significant importance for the citizens and the development of the Bulgarian economy, President Rumen Radev wrote on the social network X on Thursday. "I congratulate all those who have made a real contribution to this achievement," he added.

During consultations with representatives of the parliamentary group of There Is Such a People, Radev said that this achievement is important for Bulgaria's European integration, for the development of the Bulgarian economy and, most of all, for the Bulgarian citizens.

The Council of the European Union decided Thursday to abolish checks at the Schengen land borders of Bulgaria and Romania as of January 1 next year, the Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union said. Earlier this year, checks at the two countries' air and sea Schengen borders were abolished in a decision adopted during the Spanish presidency on December 30 last year.
