The Judges Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) adopted Tuesday by seven votes to three to propose to the Plenum of the SJC to open a new procedure for the election of the President of the Supreme Administrative Court (SAC).
The Chamber proposed that the new procedure should start on November 21 and that the submission of proposals for candidates can be made in the next four meetings of the SJC Plenum. The election of the SAC President is scheduled to take place again on March 20.
The first procedure was called off for lack of candidates. No one of the SJC members wanted to speak at the sitting. All 17 members voted to discontinue the procedure.
The nomination and election procedure opened October 17 and there were four weeks for making nominations. The election was due to take place on March 20, 2025.
The term in office of the current SAC President Georgi Cholakov will expire on Friday, and he was recently elected acting President from November 22 to the day a new president is elected.
Cholakov was elected acting President with eight members of the Judges Chamber voting in favour and two voting against. During the debate, almost all SAC judges agreed that Cholakov should continue to lead the court until the election procedure is completed.
