Since the beginning of the heating season, the Sofia Inspectorate has conducted over 230 checks on air quality, Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev reported on his Facebook page on Tuesday.
Smoke from buildings using wood burners for heating has been identified as a major source of air pollution in Sofia.
He added that 26 fines and reports have been issued, along with numerous recommendations.
The Mayor noted that Sofia usually suffers worsened air quality in the winter months and checks are being carried out in an effort to reduce pollution.
The most common violations include burning waste, trucks with muddy tires, and construction works that create dust, among others, explained the mayor.
The Sofia City Hall continues to work hard on systems improving the city's capacity to detect pollution in time, in order to protect people's health, Terziev said.
