Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) President Julian Revalski spoke of the crucial role of science in addressing climate change issues during his opening remarks at the scientific conference on Climate Risks in the Black Sea Region on Thursday. The event, part of the 61st session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, took place at BAS Headquarters.

Revalski said the conference highlights the original purpose of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), established in 1988, which is to show governments how to tackle climate change using research and scientific findings.

He added that the conference looks at environmental challenges facing the Black Sea basin, attributing them to climate change. He also spoke of the broader global issues that could arise if effective measures are not implemented to mitigate these impacts in the region.

"Climate scepticism and climate alarmism equally hinder policy development and our capacity to address the pressing issue of climate change. In this context, your role as scientific community members is crucial," said caretaker Environment and Water Minister Petar Dimitrov, who also attended the event.

"Our Ministry is diligently working to establish Bulgaria as a hub for Black Sea sciences and regional climate issues. Significant progress has already been made, and we anticipate that this momentum will soon become irreversible, yielding our initial results," he added.

IPCC Chair Jim Skea also gave a speech as part of the opening ceremony.

BAS, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Water, is hosting a series of events as part of Bulgaria's role in the 61st session of IPCC. These events, under the patronage of Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, aim to improve dialogue and collaboration on climate change issues.
