Major repairs to the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge will begin on July 10, the Road Infrastructure Agency reported here on Thursday.

Daily works will be carried out for 10-12 hours during daylight hours. No complete traffic stoppage will be introduced. A stretch of about 400 metres will be closed for the repairs. The estimated time to complete the repairs in this section is about four and a half months. The contract period for the entire project is 730 days.

The Danube Bridge route in Bulgaria was put into operation in 1954. Major repairs have not been carried out since then. More than 22 years ago the joints were strengthened. The waterproofing and asphalt pavement were replaced in 2011.

The engineering design for the facility renovation calls for complete replacement of the asphalt layers, panels, waterproofing, among others. The contract is worth BGN 44,877,229 including VAT.

Caretaker Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Gvozdeykov stated in early July that Bulgaria is fully ready to resume the Ruse-Giurgiu ferry line. The project is of key importance for easing traffic between Bulgaria and Romania in view of the upcoming repair works, he added.
