All three crossing points between Bulgaria and Turkiye will be expanded, caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev told journalists during his visit to the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the Bulgarian-Turkish border. This is also the beginning of a project of the Customs Agency to expand all border crossings, he said, adding that work with Turkiye on the matter has started.
The caretaker Prime Minister highlighted the good interaction between Bulgaria, Turkiye and Greece on the work of the trilateral communication centre at the checkpoint.
From last year until now, illegal border crossing attempts have decreased by 70% and this is thanks to the joint efforts of the three countries, he said, adding that there are 90% fewer attempts in the Turkish region of Edirne.
Efforts should go jointly - both to reduce illegal border crossings and to increase economic cooperation between the countries and the normal way tourists and citizens cross the border, Glavchev added.
He explained that an expansion of Kapitan Andreevo is planned - both at the crossing itself and the construction of a second terminal a little further north to separate traffic in the direction of Romania, or the so-called vertical north-south corridor.
The other plan is to expand the second checkpoint between Bulgaria and Turkiye at Lessovo-Hamzabeyli, with the construction of shelters, more lanes for crossing, control scales and disinfection systems.
"We can conclude that all three crossing points between Bulgaria and Turkiye will be expanded, which is a start and a good example for all of Bulgaria's crossing points, Glavchev said, explaining that if the expansion is only carried out at the Turkish border, traffic jams will appear at border crossings with Romania and Serbia.
